Chicken Tikka Masala
Yogurt-marinated chicken is seared, then simmered in a rich tomato sauce with garam masala, ginger, and cream. A takeout favorite you can make at home.
Ingredients
- 500 g boneless chicken thighs, cubed
- 150 g plain yogurt
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp grated ginger
- 2 tsp garam masala
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp paprika
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 400 g crushed tomatoes
- 150 ml heavy cream
- 1 tsp chili powder, to taste
- to taste salt
- for garnish fresh cilantro, chopped
Instructions
- Combine chicken with yogurt, lemon juice, half the garlic and ginger, 1 tsp garam masala, cumin, and paprika. Marinate at least 20 minutes (or overnight).
- Heat oil in a large skillet and sear the marinated chicken in batches until browned. Set aside.
- In the same pan, sauté the onion until soft, then add remaining garlic and ginger and cook 1 minute.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, chili powder, and remaining garam masala. Simmer 10 minutes until thickened.
- Return the chicken to the pan and simmer 10 minutes until cooked through.
- Stir in the cream and season with salt. Simmer 5 minutes more.
- Garnish with cilantro and serve with rice or naan.
